Should You Focus Exclusively on Your Cholesterol Levels?

For years we’ve heard of the dire warnings that high cholesterol levels lead to heart attack, stroke, diabetes and premature death. The medical community and the media constantly hammer the message that we need the help of statins to lower our cholesterol levels. Invasive heart surgeries are performed every year to bypass and open cholesterol laden arteries. Cholesterol lowering drugs are among the best sellers bringing in over 15 billion dollars in worldwide sales annually.Some 40 million Americans take statins. Yet this has not reduced the number of people who continue to die from heart attacks and stroke every year even though many have normal cholesterol levels at the time of death. There’s a lot more than keeping a normal cholesterol level with statins alone. Of course cholesterol is a major focus simply because it is profitable for the manufacturers who produce the drugs.Whether you believe it or not, a high cholesterol level is not very reliable in predicting a forthcoming heart attack.
